• What Is Period Poverty?

Period poverty refers to the inadequate access to menstrual hygiene supplies due to financial constraints or cultural stigmas. This lack of access can lead to health issues, missed school or work, and negative mental health impacts.

  • Students In Our Region Need Supplies

Many schools do provide period products for their students—though all do not. Some make supplies accessible in bathrooms, while others only offer them through the school nurse, counselor, or main office. While this is helpful, it’s less than ideal for students who may need them urgently.

In 2024, every school responding to the YWCA GLBR survey in Bay County indicated they needed support in providing these supplies.

  • How The Dignity Project Helps

The Dignity Project is a collaborative bulk-buying initiative dedicated to ensuring that middle and high school girls across Bay County have access to the period products they need to attend school comfortably and confidently.

We aim to expand this program to Saginaw and Midland Counties after 2025!

In 2024, the YWCA Great Lakes Bay Region surveyed Bay County middle and high school counselors and learned something striking: every single school is stretching to provide period products for their students—relying on internal fundraising or “finding the money in the budget” just to meet this basic need.

No student should have to miss class or after school activities because they lack access to essential products. The Dignity Project exists to change that—ensuring every student can focus on learning, not on whether they can afford the supplies they need.
