SVSU Sponsors “Dear Future President” Postcard Project
The Saginaw Valley State University’s Writing Center is sponsoring a “Dear Future President” postcard writing campaign as part of the 2020 Presidential election. The campaign will take place this fall and is designed to provide area residents an opportunity to directly communicate their wishes for the future of America.
Helen Raica-Klotz, Director of SVSU’s Writing Center, said that the project provides community members the opportunity to address issues that are important to them.
“We believe people’s individual voices matter,” said Raica-Klotz. “We’re pleased to support this project, which allows people to share their hope, concerns, and goals for our country with our future leader.”
This is the third postcard project conducted by the SVSU Writing Center, the last being the “Write Your Future Michigan Governor” campaign in 2018, which garnered over 1,500 postcards delivered to Lansing for the 2019 Inauguration of Gretchen Whitmer.
Community members can participate in the “Dear Future President” postcard project in a number of ways. Postcards will be available throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region at the Midland, Saginaw, and Bay public libraries, along with various coffee shops throughout the region. Or residents can fill out an electronic postcard online at https://www.svsu.edu/ccw/outreachprojects/
To encourage area students to participate, teachers can request postcards for their students by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
All postcards must be completed by November 1 and will be sent from the SVSU Writing Center to the White House in January 2020 on Inauguration Day.
The project is co-sponsored the YWCA Great Lakes Bay Region and the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture Saginaw Outpost.
“We’re excited to be a part of the postcard campaign,” said Moira Branigan, Executive Director of the YWCA Great Lakes Bay Region. “Our hope is everyone who participates is motivated to vote in November. For students – our future voters – it’s an introduction to civic engagement.”
